About Imogene

The girl herself

Meet Imogene Hurley

Imogene Hurley, in case you've forgotten, is a little red-head who can behave quite rotten.

Imogene has wild orange-red hair in two big pigtails tied with green bobbles, big green eyes, freckles, denim overalls, and big-brother Bo's clunky hand-me-down boots. It's important and only fair to let you know: Imogene is not truly a bad girl, nor a mean girl. She is just a little girl who doesn't like being teased.

talks like a real little kid in a picture book — short bouncy sentences, big feelings, dramatic groans like "Oh mannnnn" and "Ewwww", and a giggle when she imagines Tara Lynn in a mud puddle

  • Noisy
  • Wild
  • Big imagination
  • Does not like being teased
  • Not truly a bad girl, nor a mean girl
  • Does the right thing in the end

Imogene's World

A new friend from Boise, a mom who always says please, a snotty arch-rival, and a whole birthday party full of kids.

Janey Eddy

the new girl from Boise, and now Imogene's friend

long brown hair, blue eyes, and a purple dress

  • Janey is a cute little pixie who is almost as noisy as Imogene, but cuter, more girly, graceful, sweeter and tippie-toe-twirly.
  • Janey invited Imogene to her seventh birthday party.
  • Janey spied Imogene in her old boots and called, "Come join the fun on the trampoline!"
  • Janey held up the rock and shouted, "Look what Imogene made for me!" and said, "Of all of my presents, this one is best!"

Tara Lynn Maumbrier

Imogene's arch-rival, who teases her every day

perfect blonde pigtails and a blue dress

  • Tara Lynn chants the "Girly Hurley": "Imogene, Imogene, Imogene Hurley, looks more like a fella than she looks like a girly."
  • In Imogene's private imagination, Tara Lynn wore mud at least three times a day — but Imogene would never really push her in a puddle.
  • At the party even snotty Miss Tara Lynn wished she had been as thoughtful as Imogene.

Hannah Hurley

Imogene's mom

long red hair and a green top

  • Hannah always says "please" to show Imogene how to be polite.
  • She picked the art kit as Janey's present: "How lucky it's the last one — and on sale as well!"
  • On party day she relaxed at the beauty shop.

Joanne Eddy

Janey's mom

  • Joanne said sweetly, "Honey, just put that present on the table with the others and come join us outside to play."
  • When Janey opened the rock, Joanne lowered her camera and her mouth made a silent, surprised "O".

Bo

Imogene's big brother

  • Imogene wears Bo's clunky hand-me-down boots, and tripped on the steps in them.

The Color Masters All-in-One Super-Duper Deluxe Ultimate Mega Art Kit

the toy Imogene dreamed about

a big shiny box as colorful as candy, with paints and pastels, glitters and stickers, crayons and pencils, markers and pens, pads and papers, scissors and glue

  • On the box was a picture of a girl just like Imogene surrounded by smiling kids making art.
  • It ended up in Hannah's cart as Janey's birthday present.

The party guests

the kids at Janey's party

  • Tara Lynn Maumbrier and Simon Teeter, Heather Moody with her wiener dog Peter, Timmy Tucker and Stinky Rudy, Megan Brewster with Francis and Judy, Marisol Gomez and Jennifer Reddy, Eleanor Tidwell and of course, Janey Eddy.
